The documentary King Corn is about two friends, one acre of corn and the subsidized crop that drives our fast food nation. Two best friends from college move to Iowa to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, nitrogen fertilizers, and very powerful herbicides, they plant and grow an acre of of America's most subsidized grain, corn. But when they follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about what we eat AND how we farm.
So what do hamburgers, fries and soda have in common? That's a typical fast food order but they all have a corn connection. The cattle kept in the humongous meat factories (NOT FARMS) eat corn instead of grass that they used to be raised on. The fries were probably fried in corn oil. And the soda is full of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) The documentary clearly points this out.
Most people believe that Americans are obese because of lack of exercise. That may be only one component. The two men in the documentary took samples of their hair and found out that corn is a big component of their makup! It's because corn is practically unavoidable unless you make a conscious effort. The way corn metabolizes in our liver could be a big factor in why the western diet makes Americans obese. That's why Americans have gotten fatter and fatter the last 40 years in spite of the low fat and low carb bandwagons. And the way we've been eating these last 40 years could be why we could be the first generation ever to not have lived as long as our parents!!! Strong thoughts I would say.
Which leads us to:
RULE NUMBER 2: Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
Can you imagine what your great-grandmother would have thought of most of what we eat? What would she think of Go-Gurt portable tubes of yogurt? Is this food? Toothpaste? HMMM There is so much in our markets that our ancestors would not recognize! There are many reasons to avoid these food-like substances. They are full of chemical additives, corn and soy derivatives, not to mention the plastics they are packaged in! Using this rule you will keep nasty junk out of your system and you on your way to a better and healthier life!!! So think of this the next time you shop for groceries.
that's enough.....ciao!
