RULE NUMBER 5: Avoid foods that have some form of sugar (or sweetener) listed among the top three ingredients.
It's really hard to eliminate sugar completely. The further down the ingredients list the less sugar in the item and the less you have ingested.
Now food scientists have come up with tons of items that are sugar but we wouldn't know it by their name. There are forty types of sugar in processed food.....barley malt, beet sugar, brown rice syrup, cane juice, corn sweetener, dextrin, dextrose, fructo-oligoscharides, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, sucrose, invert sugar, polydextrose, sucrose, turbinado sugar ...etc etc etc. Try to get items without these or make sure they are far down the ingredient list.
One tip that I can offer is that not only have I tried to eliminate almost all of those types of sugar I have completely eliminated "fake" sugar, such as Splenda or aspartame. Studies show that switching to manufactured artificial sweeteners does not lead to weight loss, possibly because it deceives the brain with the reward of sweetness stimulating a craving for even more sweetness. Since there is no way I can give up my tea I have been using natural stevia to sweeten it. I don't use a lot, just with my tea. I have found I prefer two brands, Stevia and Suncrystals. They come in packets so it's super easy to take with. So I can enjoy sweet tea anywhere without feeling guilty. DELISH! Try it!
K, off my soapbox for today. Sorry that some of the rules in section one seem redundant. Sections two and three are less preachy. LOL
And with that I am off! I've got things to do!
ciao
