We left early Friday morning for the U.P. That's upper penninsula for you non Michiganders, you know...the wildnerness of Michigan!!! The weather and views were spectacular. The majestic pine forests stood tall. We drove thru a part of the area where they recently had wildfires. We could actually smell it before we came to it. A huge thanks to all the firefighters and volunteers who helped along the way to containing the fires.
On the way to Lake Muskallonge State Park we stopped at Tahquamenon Falls...we visited both the upper and lower falls, both seemed low. Water levels in all of Michigan lakes and such are so low. But the falls are still beautiful.
Our campsite at the park was supposed to be on the lake, well due to the low water levels the area near us was a wasteland. All we could see was the bottom of what used to be the lake.....the lake very pretty, just not near our site. We called it the toxic wasteland LOL.
On Saturday we took a drive along the road following Lake Superior towards Pictured Rocks. The sights from a tower over the Grand Sable Dunes took our breaths away. I am embarrased to say I had never heard of the log slide at the dunes. Legend has it that logs sent down the dry log chute (during the logging era) would generate enough friction to cause the chute to catch fire! How crazy is that? The chute is no longer there but you can slide down the dune, tho it is quite dangerous. It rises 300 feet above Lake Superior!!!
I stepped into Lake Superior and it is every bit as cold as everyone says, but oh so beautiful. We heard the lapping of the waves while we slept at our campsite. What a glorious sound to fall asleep to.
We spent Sunday lounging on the beach and at camp.
Karen was the main cook .... with a little help from me and Marian. She's a true girl scout, a camper afficianado!!! They both took care of me and Barq's, the non campers LOL. Barq's was such a trouper. By the end of the day he was plum tuckered out and snuggled in to sleep like a baby!
Here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure...
As you can see we had a lot of little critters right in our campsite..the crazy racoon slept in the tree the entire day, then tried to raid our cooler at night. A few other beasts we sighted were deer, geese, heron, woodpeckers and a hummingbird. Oh and on the ride up, before we even hit the U.P. we saw a bald eagle, near West Branch I think.
Well, that's a rundown of my little trip.....we had so many laughs along the way....I'm still giggling about some of them!
Stay tuned I might share some of those laughs soon!!!

Beautiful pictures, Jayne!!! Love the little chipmunk! Too cute!
thanks for sharing your holiday story, camping seems so idyllic, but I like a bathroom attached!!!!
I love your photos! They are great! Glad you had a good time!
What a great time! I'll bet all the critters kept Barqs busy. Matt got to see Lake Superior on a trip out there once and was just awed by the size of it. How lucky for you to put your feet in too.
Awesome pics, of course! There's a reason we call you J-Fab!! :)
